Meaning, material & care

The details behind this piece.

Read at arm’s length the piece is mostly obsidian: a near-black volcanic glass with a deep, mirror-like surface. The second note is the textile cord — a tight woven cord with a matte, slightly fibrous surface. It takes the form of a hanging piece that sits at the collarbone, and it belongs to Snowland Story, where landscape and stone are the starting point for the design. The lotus appears as layered overlapping petals. It is a long-standing motif across Buddhist visual culture, used here for its symmetrical, unfolding geometry. A mantra line is inscribed across the surface, following a Tibetan-language formula and reproduced as a design element. It is presented as cultural context rather than as a ritual service or a charged object.

Here is how each part of the piece behaves over time. For the obsidian, the behaviour matters more than the finish: it takes a very high polish but is more brittle than crystalline stone, so it chips rather than scratches. The textile cord appears as a closely braided cord whose matte surface shows the weave up close. Over months of wear, it softens further with handling, and a strand worn every day will eventually lift where it crosses a metal edge.

The listed configuration is Sandalwood & Black Obsidian, and we confirm the exact piece from that option. If two options are close, say how you plan to wear the piece and we will say which one suits it better. What the motif carries is symbolic, and the meaning it takes on is the wearer’s to decide. Natural materials vary, so tone, mark and grain will differ slightly from the photographed piece. The selected piece, its measurements and the preparation window are confirmed in writing before you pay.

Care

Avoid impact at edges and store it separately so the polished surface is not marked. Keep it dry, avoid perfume and household chemicals, and replace the cord once the fibres begin to lift. Take it off before swimming, bathing or washing up; prolonged water is the most common cause of avoidable wear. Store the piece separately so it does not scratch against harder jewellery.
