Meaning, material & care

The details behind this piece.

The Dzi-style bead sets the tone: an agate bead worked with eye, stripe or wave patterns in contrasting tones. The thokcha provides the counterweight, being a dark, heavily patinated metal surface with an uneven, hand-worked feel. It takes the form of a strand that sits at the wrist, and it belongs to the Dzi-style bead series, where the bead pattern leads the design and the companion materials support it. The Dzi-style motif appears as eye, stripe and wave patterns worked into the agate itself. These patterns belong to the dzi bead tradition, and the label describes the bead design only — not the age, origin or history of the piece.

Material behaviour explains most of what happens to a piece after a year of wear, so it is worth being specific. The Dzi-style bead is an agate bead whose eye and stripe patterns sit in contrasting bands across the stone. Worn regularly, because the pattern is inside the stone rather than applied, it does not wear off with handling. Thokcha is a different case in wear: the patina is part of the surface and will shift slowly with handling rather than stay uniform. The textile cord appears as a tight woven cord with a matte, slightly fibrous surface. Against the skin, it stays soft against the skin and holds a knot well, but a daily-worn strand will fray where it rubs a clasp.

Three wrist ranges are listed, spanning 6.75–8 in at the smallest and 8–9.5 in at the largest. If you are between two options, the smaller one usually sits better on a piece that carries weight. Protection is presented as cultural context and a personal reminder, not a guaranteed result. Slight differences in shade, inclusion and grain between pieces are inherent to the materials. The piece, its dimensions and the preparation window are set out in writing first, and only then is payment taken.

Care

Care for it as you would a polished agate: keep it away from chemicals and impact, and wipe it dry after wear. Keep it dry, do not over-polish it, and wipe it gently with a soft cloth. Keep it dry, avoid perfume and household chemicals, and replace the cord once the fibres begin to lift. Water, perfume and cleaning products are the three things most likely to shorten its life. Storing it apart from other pieces keeps the surface in the condition it arrived in.
