Meaning, material & care

The details behind this piece.

The tiger eye carries the design, and it is a golden-brown banded stone that shifts and brightens as the piece turns. The agate provides the counterweight, being a banded, gently translucent stone whose layers catch light at the polished surface. As a shape it is a strand that sits at the wrist. It belongs to the Dzi-style bead series, where the bead pattern leads the design and the companion materials support it. The Dzi-style motif appears as eye, stripe and wave patterns worked into the agate itself. These patterns belong to the dzi bead tradition, and the label describes the bead design only — not the age, origin or history of the piece.

What follows is a plain description of each material, including how it changes. The tiger eye is a banded stone whose gold and brown lines move with the light as the piece turns. Worn regularly, it is hard and takes a good polish, so it survives daily wear better than most stones. Agate — a banded stone that stays faintly translucent, so each layer picks up light differently. Day to day, it takes daily knocks without dulling, though a thin edge can still chip against stone or metal. The Dzi-style bead appears as an agate bead worked with eye, stripe or wave patterns in contrasting tones. Against the skin, the pattern sits within the stone rather than on top of it, so it does not rub away with wear. Inside the piece, the pearl is a rounded nacre surface with a soft, layered lustre rather than a hard shine. Handled often, it has a comparatively soft nacre surface, so it is better kept away from other pieces in storage. The brass is a warm yellow metal with a slightly duller, more golden surface than copper. Over months of wear, it develops a darker tone and, in damp air, a green-ish film that buffs away.

The strand is offered in three wrist ranges, from 6.5–8 in to 9.5–10.5 in. Send a measurement rather than a size letter and we will match the closest available option. The design language points at balance; it makes no claim about what the piece does. The photographed piece is a representative example; natural variation in the selected piece is expected. The piece, its dimensions and the preparation window are set out in writing first, and only then is payment taken.

Care

Wipe it dry and store it separately; nothing beyond avoiding long soaking is needed. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and store it separately so the polish is not scratched by other jewellery. Care for it as you would a polished agate: keep it away from chemicals and impact, and wipe it dry after wear. Put pearls on after perfume and take them off first; wipe them with a soft damp cloth and dry them fully. Wipe it dry after wear; a soft cloth restores the shine, and any intentional antique finish should be left alone. Wipe it after wear, store it dry and away from direct sun, and it will need very little else.
