Frequently Asked Questions

Stone disclosure, treatments, sizing and ordering for this edit.

01

How do you describe turquoise on these pages?

By what the stone is, not by what it might be. Natural, stabilised, treated and reconstituted turquoise are different materials and are named separately. If a piece uses turquoise-tone material rather than turquoise, the word tone appears in the description.

02

What does stabilised mean?

It means a porous or chalky stone has been infused with a resin so it holds together and keeps its colour with wear. It is a common and accepted workshop practice, and it is disclosed here rather than hidden. It is not the same as dyeing, which is also named where it applies.

03

Will clear or smoky quartz stay this colour?

Quartz is stable in normal wear. Some pieces in this edit are heat-treated to deepen colour, which is a permanent change, and those pages note it. Sunlight will not fade a properly set quartz, but it will eventually dull a dyed cord or a resin-bonded strand.

04

Why do two pieces in the same material look different?

Because they are different stones. Banding, matrix and vein patterns vary piece by piece, and the photographed item is the item we hold. If you want a specific look — more matrix, less matrix, a tighter colour band — send the product link and ask, and we will send current photographs.

05

How should I care for turquoise?

Keep it away from soap, sunscreen, perfume and household cleaners, which can discolour a porous stone, and never put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear and store it apart from harder stones that could scratch the surface.

06

Can a strand be shortened?

Usually, and sometimes it can be extended by adding matching beads. Tell us the target length before ordering so we can confirm what the current strand allows, whether the clasp needs changing, and what it does the preparation window.
