Meaning, material & care

The details behind this piece.

The lapis lazuli leads here, and it is a deep blue stone, usually with flecks of gold-tone pyrite and white calcite through it. The cinnabar provides the counterweight, being a deep red material with a dense, almost matte surface. The form is a hanging piece that sits at the collarbone, and it belongs to the Dzi-style bead series, where the bead pattern leads the design and the companion materials support it. The Dzi-style motif appears as eye, stripe and wave patterns worked into the agate itself. These patterns belong to the dzi bead tradition, and the label describes the bead design only — not the age, origin or history of the piece.

The materials do not age at the same rate, and that difference is worth setting out. Lapis Lazuli is a different case in wear: it is a softer stone than quartz and will dull where it is rubbed repeatedly. For the cinnabar, the behaviour matters more than the finish: the colour is even and strong, and the surface is firm but dislikes abrasion. The agate appears as a banded, gently translucent stone whose layers catch light at the polished surface. Against the skin, it is a hard, durable stone for everyday wear, though a sharp edge can chip against a hard surface. Inside the piece, the Dzi-style bead is an agate bead whose eye and stripe patterns sit in contrasting bands across the stone. Handled often, because the pattern is inside the stone rather than applied, it does not wear off with handling. The pearl is a rounded nacre surface with a soft, layered lustre rather than a hard shine. Over months of wear, it has a comparatively soft nacre surface, so it is better kept away from other pieces in storage. Silver-Tone Metal — a bright cool-toned metal finish, plated rather than solid silver. In everyday use, the finish holds up well day to day, though a plated layer thins gradually where it rubs. The textile cord appears as a tight woven cord with a matte, slightly fibrous surface. Worn against fabric, it stays soft against the skin and holds a knot well, but a daily-worn strand will fray where it rubs a clasp.

Sizing is confirmed from your own measurement rather than from a standard label. The photographs and the written summary carry the same detail, so nothing about the selected piece is left to assumption. The compassion theme is cultural reference and a wearer’s reminder, nothing more. Natural materials vary, so tone, mark and grain will differ slightly from the photographed piece. We confirm the current piece, the finished dimensions and the lead time in writing before any payment.

Care

Keep it away from water, soap, perfume and household cleaners. Avoid water, heat and household chemicals, and store the piece separately to prevent scuffing. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and store it separately so the polish is not scratched by other jewellery. Care for it as you would a polished agate: keep it away from chemicals and impact, and wipe it dry after wear. Put pearls on after perfume and take them off first; wipe them with a soft damp cloth and dry them fully. Keep it away from water, perfume and abrasive cloths so the finish lasts longer. Keep it dry, avoid perfume and household chemicals, and replace the cord once the fibres begin to lift. Wipe it after wear, store it dry and away from direct sun, and it will need very little else.
